A cleaner on a Hong Kong train made the grisly discovery of the body of a newborn baby with the umbilical cord and placenta still attached on Sunday.

The 53 year old found the newborn under a seat on an empty train, stopped at a Tiu King Leng-bound platform. The infant, whose sex is yet unconfirmed, was wrapped in clothing and placed inside a plastic bag. This bag was then put into another cloth bag.

Police were called to the scene at 11:30am, and the baby was pronounced dead half an hour later.

Investigations are underway, with authorities from Yau Tsim Mong district reviewing CCTV footage in an attempt to discover who abandoned the infant. An autopsy will be carried out to determine cause of death.

Another body of a baby girl was found dumped in a toilet block in January in North Point. The baby, who measured 50cm (19.6in) long, was also found by a cleaner and left with no identification.
