Local born director Wong Kar-wai swept the Hong Kong Film Awards Sunday, with his martial arts epic The Grandmaster winning 12 prizes, including best director, best film, and best actress for Zhang Ziyi.

The film is based on the life of Ip Man, the legendary Chinese martial artist and mentor to Bruce Lee.

It was another martial artist who won best actor however, with Nick Cheung taking the statue for his performance as a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter in Unbeatable.

It was Wong's night overall however, with the Grandmaster winning in 12 of the 14 categories in which it was nominated, including best screenplay, best supporting actor (Zhang Jin) and best cinematography (Philippe Le Sourd).

Mainland star Zhang Ziyi took the best actress award for her role in Grandmaster. Zhang also won best actress in 2004 for her performance in another Wong film, 2046
