Local Pok Fu Lam residents captured the moment when a 31,730 tonne German container ship ran aground in Hong Kong's Sandy Bay, Saturday.
The "Hansa Constitution" was blown off course after suffering a mechanical failure en route to Shenzen from Jiang Yin. Hong Kong has been battered by heavy rain and strong winds on and off for the past few weeks, with Hong Kong Observatory warning of strong winds and reduced nautical visibility on Saturday.
Witnesses can be heard on camera asking whether they should call for emergency help, while others wondered whether the ship would eventually slow down or crash into the sea wall.
Resident Kevin Sites filmed the incident, saying that it looked like the captain dropped anchor as the vessel approached the city, finally slowing the ship to a halt just feet from a pathway popular with joggers and the sea wall.
No one was reportedly hurt during the incident and the ship escaped any hull breaches.
