In order to get more Chinese people to take part in Earth Hour on Saturday, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has developed the Blue Sky iPhone app, which can be used to turn smog-laden skies in pictures to a more pleasant and natural blue colour.
Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organized by WWF. It encourages people to turn off their lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. It started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and has since grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns worldwide. Earth Hour 2014 is scheduled for Saturday, March 29, from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.
As China’s only big official contribution to the event is turning off the lights at the Olympic Bird’s Nest in Beijing, WWF has developed the Blue Sky app as a way to engage more Chinese individuals to also take part and raise their awareness for the growing environmental problems the world faces.
Developed by Ogilvy & Mather Shanghai, the app encourages Chinese people to take a picture of a pollution filled sky and then use the app to turn said sky a smog-less baby blue. A combination of the ‘before’ and ‘after’ snapshots can be shared on WeChat or Sina Weibo. Users are also encouraged to sign their name in support of reducing pollution.
The WWF Blue Sky app supports English and Chinese and is free for iOS.
