22 policemen have been punished in a prostitution crack down in China's so-called "capital of sex" Dongguan, ECNS reports.
Local policemen said Tuesday that nine of their colleagues are in detention and 13 others have received punishment for harbouring the sex trade, bending the law and neglecting official duties. 14 others are currently under investigation for their roles in the illegal prostitution trade.
The crackdown follows the Ministry of Public Security's pledge last month to clean up the sex trade in Dongguan and nationwide after China Central Television (CCTV) featured an expose on prostitution in the city in Guangdong Province. The city is famous for casinos, brothels, massage parlours, and bath centres, with corrupt local officials commonly blamed for the prevalence of this seedy underworld.
Yan Xiaokang, vice mayor of Dongguan and head of the city’s Public Security Bureau was sacked in mid February for dereliction of duties, after the Guangdong provincial committee of the Communist Party of China released a statement blaming Yan's failures for the "persistent illegal sex trade in Dongguan, which has reflected very badly on the city, both domestically and internationally". The deputy police chief and 10 other senior officials were also fired from their positions.
Estimates put the number of sex workers in China between four and six million.
