Sasha and Malia Obama, two hip young Americans currently visiting China, were mortified Tuesday when their mother decided to take part in a Tai Chi exercise at a middle school in Chengdu, Sichuan province. 

The girls' mother – US first lady Michelle Obama – usually lives in the shadow of her far more embarrassing husband but has come into her own during the China trip: practising calligraphy and giving impromptu speeches all over the country
