Two women who became notorious in Taiwan for vandalising hotel rooms and apartments are maintaining that the Chinese government wants to kill them.
Yao, 19, and Tsang, 18, believed to be from Hong Kong, made headlines this month after they used fake IDs to enter Taiwan and trashed 6,000 yuan ($980) worth of their Taipei landlord's property, including leaving bloody sanitary pads, underwear, and rubbish strewn around the room and stealing a TV set. Taiwan police issued a warrant for the pair's arrest and nabbed them Sunday at a budget hotel in the southern city of Tainan, where they had been hiding out. Police found that this room had been defaced in the same way, with "Taiwan is China" written on the walls.
According to the SCMP, "a worker at the Tainan hostel recognised the two women from television, even though Tsang had dyed her hair orange and Yau had dyed hers pink." The women also used fake names to check in.
The duo were placed in detention early Monday, following their arrest the previous day for theft and vandalism. They are also under investigation for alleged forgery and were found to have overstayed their permits to visit Taiwan, according to Taipei district prosecutors.
According to Apple Daily, the pair said that they were on the run after robbing 100,000 yuan ($16,000) worth of treasure from graves in Xiamen, Fujian province. The women claimed to have fled Hong Kong after they were framed for stealing a mobile phone. They insisted that the Chinese Communist Party was "trying to kill them," and that they planned to commit suicide after their funds were spent.
The Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office said in a statement that it does not believe the Taiwanese public's impression of Hong Kong travellers will be affected by this incident: "Most Hong Kong travelers to Taiwan behave well and obey the local laws."
