Late last month, five year old Sumatran tigress Melati gave birth to three adorable cubs at the ZSL London Zoo. Her 106 day pregnancy and subsequent birth is great news for the preservation of the species, as the extremely rare Sumatran tigers are facing extinction, with less than 300 left in the world.
Hidden camera footage shows the entire birth process and cubs' first days, with mother Melati remaining close to her cubs inside special “cubbing dens”, only occasionally venturing away from her babies for food. Zoo keepers have yet to establish the sex of the cubs, choosing to leave them alone with their mother for the time being.
Zookeeper Teague Stubbington said: "We couldn't be more delighted with our new arrivals, and with how Melati is responding to her three cubs."
The joyous event comes less than six months after the tragic drowning of the zoo’s first Sumatran tiger cub in 17 years, two weeks after its birth in October.
