On September 12, in celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, a grand cultural and food festival themed in “Over the Moon · Touch of ASEAN” was held at the Crowne Plaza Guangzhou City Centre. Organized by Guangdong International Building—affectionately known as “63”—the event was co-hosted by the Consulates General of five ASEAN nations: the Philippines, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The festival sought to strengthen economic, cultural, artistic, and tourism ties between China and the ASEAN countries through the unifying power of food.
In homage to Chinese traditions and to celebrate this festival of reunion, Guangdong International Building crafted an impressive 55-centimeter-wide mooncake. Its filling, known as “Five Kernels,” is made from walnuts, almonds, peanuts, melon seeds, and sesame—ingredients whose Chinese names echo the Confucian virtues of “benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and faith.” The mooncake’s surface featured the number “63” alongside ASEAN emblems, all intricately surrounded by auspicious clouds, lotus flowers, and traditional Chinese motifs, symbolizing harmony and good fortune.
The ASEAN Food Festival was a highlight of the festival, featuring national and sponsor booths showcasing the culinary traditions of ASEAN countries. Attendees had the chance to immerse themselves in the unique flavors of ASEAN cultures, fostering deeper cultural exchanges and appreciation.
The festival also featured captivating performances from the Philippines and Laos, with melodies and rhythms that brought the sounds of Southeast Asia to life. Guests savored traditional snacks while enjoying the rich, multicultural celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
In addition to the food displays, interactive activities added to the festive atmosphere. Guests participated in DIY mooncake workshop, lantern riddles, cuju (ancient Chinese football), pitch-pot games, and hammer tosses, enjoying a perfect blend of delicious food and traditional Mid-Autumn entertainment.
This festival not only celebrated the Mid-Autumn spirit of unity but also strengthened cross-cultural ties between China and the ASEAN nations, with everyone under the same moon, sharing in the joy of reunion.
