Several apps designed to help users hunt for ghosts have gone viral in China, with one, 'Ghost Observer', becoming the most downloaded app on the Chinese App Store.
The app encourages users to use it to hunt spirits: to see them, take pictures, and to hear and translate any communication from the spirit world.
Once open, the app shows a black and white interface with a radar detector which uses the iPhone's magnetic sensors to scan electromagnetic frequencies for lurking paranormal phenomena. It then shows "ghosts" around the user along with a brief summary of the spirit's characteristics and history.
Screenshots from the app are becoming an ever more common sight on Weibo and other Chinese social media.
Liu Bo, a senior IT engineer in Chengdu told ECNS that cameras on the mobile phone can't form electromagnetic images and the discovered "ghosts" are merely dynamic images installed in the app.
