The closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics took place on Sunday, marking the end of a remarkably error-free games.
The Sochi Games ended up "great," according to International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, who said the response from the athletes was "overwhelmingly positive," and they "loved" the venues and facilities.
Host Russia finished off a successful competition proudly perched atop the medal table with 13 golds, beating Norway and Canada in second and third places.
China finished 12th with nine medals including three golds – the highest ranked Asian nation, with South Korea placing 13th and Japan 17th – despite winning two fewer medals and placing lower in the table than at the Vancouver Games in 2010.
Chinese sports officials declared their satisfaction with the performance, especially with breakthroughs in several events, including men's curling and women's speed skating.
During the ceremony the host city responsibilities were officially handed over to Pyeongchang, South Korea.
