On Thursday, China officially issued a yellow alert as Typhoon Lekima churns toward China, Xinhua reports. A yellow alert is the third highest alert in the four-tier system.

As predicted, Lekima – the 9th typhoon of the season – gained strength over the evening and is now classified as a super typhoon. However, the storm is expected to weaken once it hits the coast of China.

According to the National Meteorological Center, Lekima will likely make landfall in Zhejiang province. Shanghai and the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shandong should be prepared for heavy rains, strong winds and possible flooding from Friday through Sunday.

The storm is currently approaching Taiwan, where it is expected to bring heavy rainfall and powerful winds to northern Taiwan on Thursday and Friday. The storm will likely make landfall in Zhejiang province on Saturday morning and move north toward the Shanghai area on Sunday.
