Twelve Guangzhou residents were involved in a serious bus crash in Thailand on June 29, resulting in three of the tourists being hospitalized for their injuries.

According to the Thaiger, the accident took place en route from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai on a portion of road known locally as the ‘Curve of 100 Corpses.’

Of the three individuals sent to the hospital, one is seriously injured, but none are in life-threatening condition.

Thanong Tippor, a 45-year-old bus driver, is reportedly to blame for the crash. After approaching the dangerous curve too quickly, he hit a concrete barrier, causing the bus to land on its side.

Chinese Consul General Ren Yisheng of the Chiang Mai Consulate General traveled with other representatives to Doi Saket Hospital to support those involved in the crash and ensure they receive adequate care, according to Xinhua News.

Renowned for its pristine beaches, natural splendor, temples and historic sites, Thailand ranks among the top tourist destinations in the world and sees millions of Chinese residents visiting the country each year.

Worldwide, traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among tourists, and Thailand certainly exemplifies the issue. World Health Organization data reveals that the country has the second highest traffic accident fatality rate in the world, with 36.2 deaths per 100,000 residents, or 66 traffic deaths each day.

Thai authorities are reminding tourists to be cautious when choosing activities and to avoid renting motorbikes and cars – if there’s one thing tourists in Thailand are known for, surely it’s exercising caution.
