Thirteen people have perished after a private vessel capsized while crossing Guizhou province’s Beipan River last Thursday, May 23, according to Xinhua

A total of 29 passengers were on the boat when it overturned at approximately 6.30pm, 11 of which were rescued by 8am on Friday morning by first responders, according to a Weibo post by the Ministry of Emergency Management. The remaining five passengers are presumably still missing.

Rescued passengers that suffered injuries during the presumably terrifying ordeal were transported to the hospital to receive medical attention. In the wake of the incident, the boat’s owner has been detained by police and authorities in Guizhou have launched a province-wide water safety inspection campaign.
