Retired Hall of Fame basketball player Dennis Rodman brought some of his former NBA player friends to Pyongyang, North Korea this week to commemorate the birthday of despot and uncle-murderer Kim Jong-un with an exhibition game.

According to state media, the American team, comprised of basketball stars, lost to the North Korean squad. In an unplanned gesture before the game, Rodman serenaded Kim with a heartfelt rendition of "Happy Birthday", while a crowd of nervous onlookers awkwardly tried to clap along.

After the somewhat disturbing performance, Rodman thanked Kim and his wife for attending, and his fellow players for joining him. Rodman has previously described the North Korean dictator, who in December brutally purged his own uncle, as an "awesome guy". He also claimed previous generations of the Kim family had all been "great leaders".

This was Rodman's fourth visit to the proto-nuclear-country-cum-death-camp this past year. The celebrity has come under fire for his relationship with his "friend for life", and for his comments on American Kenneth Bae, who has been sentenced to 15 years in a North Korean labour camp. In a recent interview with CNN Rodman vehemently defended himself against these criticisms.
