55 sheep killed running away from leopard

A farmer has lost over 80,000 yuan after 55 of his sheep died when the animals stampeded in fear from a leopard which had entered their grazing grounds near Jiyuan, Henan province.

The majority of the sheep died from a combination of panic and being trampled by their neighbours as the flock fled from the leopard. According to the flock's owner, the leopard only killed one of the sheep itself.

Leopards are usually found in forests, but in recent years have been known to prey on livestock due to "ecological environmental improvement", according to an official with the local nature reserve.
