After making its debut in China earlier this month, Marvel’s Venom has captured the attention of the entire country. Since hitting the Chinese big screen on November 9, the film has made over USD207 million at China’s box office, and about USD800 million worldwide. According to Movieweb, a movie news and review website, Venom has managed to surpass Deadpool in box office sales. Venom is also the third-biggest superhero film in China based off current ticket revenue, according to Forbes.
While ticket sales have been soaring in China this month, the success may in part be thanks to a bizarre marketing campaign depicting the creature as a big, cute and cuddly pal. The movie’s massive, murderous alien symbiote has been portrayed as a helpful, warm and protective friend in a series of comical public service announcements.

Sony’s China marketing team has released cartoons with the Marvel icon being named, 'Venom: Protector of Civilized Behavior.' On Columbia Picture's official Weibo account (@美国索尼哥伦比亚电影公司), they posted a series of light-hearted cartoons explaining why Venom would be a good boyfriend. The images have been a hit online with both Twitter and Weibo users saying they’d really like to see this version of Venom on the big screen.

Just this past weekend Venom earned Sony Pictures a whopping USD87.2 million in ticket sales. While it is hard to attribute such strong results with a corny marketing campaign, it’s possible that the rise in popularity of the movie’s star has impacted the film’s success in China.
