On October 15, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau released results from a recent study on centenarians living in Shanghai. And, according to their findings, there are currently 2,281 Shanghai locals who have lived more than 100 years. It was also revealed that among these centenarians, three quarters are female, reports Shine.

Since 2008, this is the 11th research study on longevity that has been conducted in Shanghai. The results also revealed that the oldest male in Shanghai is Song Honggen from Jiading District, who is 109 years old this year. While in the female category, Xu Suzhen from Huangpu District tops the list at 111 years old. This achievement also makes her the oldest person in Shanghai.

Tomorrow is Chongyang Festival, a traditional Chinese holiday known for respecting and caring for seniors. On Monday, to commemorate the special occasion, the government granted 20 centenarians the honor of a 'longevity star.' In addition, a couple who are 101 and 100 years respectively were honored as 'centenarian couple.'

Over the years, the number of centenarians in the city has been climbing. According to census statistics, back in 1953, there was only one centenarian in Shanghai. In 2011, the figure first passed one thousand. Last year, the number reached 2,035.

It is said that Shanghai is the most aging city in China. According to Sohu, the city has the highest number of elderly citizens (31.6 percent) as well as the highest life expectancy (81.63 years old).
