Qianhai in South Shenzhen is set to be the fourth largest business center in the world by the time it is completed in 2020. With developments already underway in the Nanshan-based entrepreneurial center, the area is set to be a main focal point for business and transport infrastructure in the Pearl River Delta.
The proposed construction will mainly consist of wonderfully designed office buildings, but residents of Shenzhen can also look forward to the prospect of another awesome piece of architecture – a 1.2-kilometer-long sky garden.
London-based architecture firm Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners announced that they had won the contract to create the innovative, green space through their website on September 26. The sky garden will also consist of a major public space at the water’s edge that will be known as ‘Performance Park,’ as well as an opera house and a convention center.

Senior partner at the firm, Richard Rogers, said about the project: “Having the opportunity to create this bold and confident intervention will focus the city’s attempt to create a rich and diverse, culturally led public realm. This in itself will become the key element in how the city will naturally grow and develop over the coming years.”
This sky garden will be built so as to fit snugly between sparkling silver skyscrapers, giving workers in the area the perfect refuge away from the rat race come lunchtime. At least one part of what will make the sky garden special is the firm's proposal to make it an area in which pedestrians can move around at a slow pace, something we're sure that more than a few Shenzheners will be excited about.
While completion of the project is a long way off, we came across some fantastic photos online and, as we are barely able to contain our excitement, we want to share them with you:
