The city of Hengyang in Hunan witnessed a shocking incident yesterday evening, when a car ‘deliberately’ plowed into a crowd of people in the city’s Binjiang Park. The tragic episode unfolded just past 7pm.
As of 10.30pm last night, nine people were killed owing to the crash, with 46 injured. Among the wounded, three suffered serious injuries, according to Hengyang Release.
One witness told reporters that the driver, who was behind the wheel of a red SUV, sped towards the middle of the park where middle-aged residents were square dancing and walking.
The malicious driver, Yang Zanyun, was apprehended by police and taken into custody. According to media reports, Yang, who was born in 1964, has a lengthy criminal record. Between 1992 and 2018, Yang was sent to prison a total of six times for offenses ranging from inflicting intentional injury and arson to drug trafficking and blackmail, according to Today Quanzhou.
The motive behind Yang’s horrific act yesterday evening is still under investigation.
Netizens have been quick to jump to the conclusion that the murderous driver is a cancer patient and that the act was his way of lashing out at society. A staff member from the Hengyang Public Security Bureau vaguely confirmed the theory, telling reporters: “You can understand it like that.”
