The Hong Kong woman who faked a child abduction to cover up the murder of her infant daughter appeared in court Wednesday accused of preventing a lawful burial.

The court heard that 32 year old Ng Tin-yan left her six month old daughter, Yu Hoi-ching, in the family's apartment alone to attend a violin class. According to prosecutors, when Ng returned home the infant was fine, but at 9pm Hoi-ching showed no signs of life and Ng attempted first aid. The following day, November 18, Ng dumped her daughter's body in a rubbish bin behind her building.

Later that week, Ng sparked an international manhunt when she accused a "mainland woman" of making off with her daughter from a pram. Photos of Yu Hoi-ching were splashed on the front pages of several major Hong Kong newspapers and the case was reported on by many mainland media outlets. On November 26, police told reporters that they were treating the case as a hoax and investigating Ng, who admitted to covering up her daughter's death a few days later.
