An image of a patriotic fan holding a China flag at the sidelines of the 2018 FIFA World Cup final game in Russia is going viral on Chinese social media.

In the image, a lone fan among a sea of Croatian supporters can be seen waving the red and yellow during the first half of the France-Croatia football match. The five-starred flag is positioned so that it completely covers up a checkered Croatian one.

Social media users were amused by the image, with some poking fun at the unidentified man's "stubborness."

"This is a message to the world that China already has five stars," joked one.

"The national team might be late, but we will not be absent," added another.

China's first and only appearance in the World Cup was in 2002, when the national team finished second to last in the rankings and failed to score a single goal over three games.
