An altercation in Nanjing between a Heilongjiang man and a foreign student tragically resulted in the gruesome stabbing and subsequent death of the Pakistani national on July 11, The Nanjinger reports.
The student, who was identified as 26-year-old Moiz Uddin (pictured above), had just left a popular student bar in Nanjing's 1912 entertainment district with a female companion after watching a World Cup game. At 2.40am, CCTV footage showed Uddin arguing with the local, who police later identified only by his surname, Cong.
While no information about the argument itself has surfaced, the footage shows Cong momentarily walking away before returning and initiating the fight which resulted in Uddin's death.
Since then, graphic mobile phone footage of the incident has surfaced on WeChat, showing a bystander performing CPR on Uddin as his crying female friend is bent over the body.
Following the incident, there has been an outpouring of grief from Nanjing’s student community on WeChat, with many pleading for justice in the case.
Uddin began studying Chinese at Nanjing Normal University in September 2017 and was planning to begin his Masters degree this fall. The student had been scheduled to fly back home to Pakistan for the summer holiday the day after the incident took place.
In a statement, the Xuanwu District police department confirmed it received a distress call at 2.47am regarding an argument nearby the Nanjing Tobacco Factory. Police officers were dispatched to the scene soon afterwards. Uddin was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Cong, a 28-year-old native of Heilongjiang, has been arrested and is the subject of an ongoing investigation, according to the statement.
Meanwhile, Pakistani newspaper The National reports that Pakistan's embassy in Beijing and its Consulate General in Shanghai are actively cooperating with Chinese authorities on the investigation. The embassy also expressed its condolences to Uddin's family.
