In Jiangmen, a minor crime resulted in fatal consequences. On the morning of May 25, after a thief stole a bag from a man by the last name of Wang, Wang went after him, according to Global Times.

Eventually the thief decided to try to swim across a river with the bag, and Wang jumped in right after him. After struggling to swim with the bag in tow, the thief left it in the river and focused on making it to the opposite shore. Wang stopped pursuing him and went to get his bag instead.

Bystanders called police when they saw the two men jump in, but rescuers didn’t arrive in time: due to overexertion or lack of stamina, neither made it back to the riverbank. Mr. Guo, a passerby who witnessed this incident, said he saw Wang turn back and then sink under the water, according to Global Times. He thought that if Wang had just waited at the riverbank for the thief, he would have survived.

An official police report states that Jiangmen police retrieved the two men’s bodies at around 4.20pm, when Wang and the thief were officially declared dead.
