In case you went to bed early yesterday evening and missed all the action: a deluge of Biblical proportions hit Guangzhou last night. Rain began falling in Zhujiang New Town at shortly after 10pm last night and carried on unabated until this morning.
It was the second night of violent rain in Guangzhou in as many days, with a ‘Red Warning’ for torrential rainfall issued on the evening of May 2 in Liwan District. Last night’s downpour resulted in a red-level rain alert in Panyu District.
According to Eastday Weather, the Guangzhou City Meteorological Administration upgraded the already standing Yellow Warnings for Liwan, Yuexiu and Tianhe districts to Orange Warnings at 12.24am last night.
As often happens during heavy rains at this time of year, various areas of Guangzhou fell victim to flooding. Below, a collection of flood photos* from Panyu District.
An already-damaged pedestrian slash bike bridge in Haizhu District also collapsed as a result of the heavy rain (see below).
Statistically speaking, May is the second rainiest month of the year in Guangzhou, with an average of 300 millimeters of rain and 19 rainy days. June is the wettest month of the year in Canton, with 320 millimeters of rainfall and 21 rainy days.
