Residents of Guangdong and Fujian experienced tremors last night from a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that shook Taiwan at around 11.50pm (CST) yesterday, according to a WeChat post by the Shenzhen Evening News.
Netizens from the two southern Chinese provinces took to the internet to share their thoughts, with one web user writing, “A 6.5 earthquake hits Hualien, Taiwan. Those living in [eastern Guangdong's] Chaozhou felt it.”
Another Chaozhou resident noted that the shaking ground was “dead scary.”
No deaths or injuries have been reported in Chinese mainland Strangely, the Guangdong Province Earthquake Administration did not record the tremors on their website.
Sadly, across the strait in Taiwan, at least four people are dead and hundreds more injured after last night’s violent quake. According to the Telegraph, the natural disaster resulted in at least four buildings collapsing (or tilting hazardously, as seen in the image below) on the island’s eastern coast.
As of 2.30pm today, BBC reported that over 140 people are presently unaccounted for in one damaged building.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 22 kilometers northeast of Hualien, a notable tourist city. Its 'focus,' or the location where the quake began, was located 1 kilometer below the earth’s surface. Aftershocks have continued today in Taiwan.
