Initial reports from local media said the smoke came after a battery-operated car spontaneously combusted. The car had been at the charging station during the combustion.

According to the official Pudong Airport Weibo account, staff rushed to the scene and were able to remove the car totally intact. Firefighters were later photographed disposing of the car.
