Police in Huizhou, Guangdong province prevented a gang of 23 suspected thieves from colluding on their statements prior to interrogation by covering their faces in newspaper and tape.
Many may have scoffed when, as part of the rash of human rights reforms announced on Friday, the official pronouncement said that the country will "work to ban extorting confessions through torture and physical abuse." Not extorting confessions through torture and physical abuse is a pretty low bar to set for a functioning judicial system. And yet, if police think wrapping suspects' heads in tape and paper like inanimate objects being packed for moving house, maybe they do need to be told such basic things like don't wrap suspects' heads in tape and paper potentially preventing them from breathing and generally treating them like less than human despite them not even having being interrogated let alone convicted I mean really come on what the fuck?
