A male passenger was escorted off a Sichuan Airlines flight on Tuesday evening after claiming the plane was being hijacked mid-flight, Sixth Tone reports.
Midway through the journey, the 22-year-old man began shouting that a hijacking was underway as Flight 3U8952 was en route to Chongqing from Xiamen.
“People want to harm me, some have knives, some have guns, people want to hijack the plane!” the man (surnamed Zhang) allegedly yelled in the direction of the cockpit.
He was eventually subdued in the back of the cabin by flight crew, who were assisted by another passenger.
Zhang was then booted off the flight and detained by authorities during a planned stop in Changsha, before being sent to the hospital. The incident came less than 24 hours after another flight was forced to land in Changsha following a false fire alarm.
Though initial police reports said Zhang was incoherent when the crew initially tried to speak with him, Changsha airport authorities determined he had no criminal or drug history, nor was he under the influence of drugs. Zhang's relatives later revealed that he was "emotionally unstable."
After a security check, the other passengers eventually reboarded and made their way to Chongqing shortly after midnight.
