We knew it was going to be cold yesterday, but we didn't expect snow to fall in the capital this early in the season.
But snow it did in some mountainous and suburban areas of Beijing on Tuesday. With temperatures as low as 3 degrees, Lingshan Mountain (the tallest mountain in the capital) reported snowfall starting at 5am on Tuesday morning, Xinhua reports.
The mountainous areas of Yanqing and Fangshan districts were also blanketed in snow on Tuesday.
Six centimeters of snow were also reported on Xiaohaituo Mountain, where the 2022 Winter Olympics will be located.
A cold front swept over northern China on Sunday causing a 10 degree temperature drop in some areas of the capital and a high of 10 degrees in downtown Beijing on Tuesday.
In addition to snowfall in the far-reaching areas of Beijing, the capital also saw substantial rainfall during the past few days. Low visibility caused by these unfavorable weather conditions caused 133 flight delays and cancellations at Beijing Capital International Airport on Monday.
