The Beijing Food and Drug Administration is forcing Haidilao restaurants around the capital to undergo a series of inspections following the chain’s recent sanitation scandal.
Videos taken at two Haidilao restaurants in Beijing showed that the outlets were operating under extremely unhygienic conditions.
The footage shows rats in the kitchen, a dishwasher lined with residue and an employee unblocking a clogged sewage pipe using a ladle.
The inspections will occur over a two-week period at branches around Beijing. Any business that supplies food to the restaurants will also be looked into.
Inspectors will also closely examine Haidilao’s business licenses, cleaning equipment and measures, and pest control practices.
The restaurants must also have their kitchens open to the public for the next month.
Haidilao did release a statement on Friday apologizing for the scandal and saying that all branches of the restaurant chain will employ proper sanitation measures. The chain has also promised to comply with the Beijing Food and and Drug Administration’s recommendations.
