A Guangzhou native celebrated the return of a lost engagement ring by treating 5,000 Chongqing residents to a bowl of spicy noodles.
South China Morning Post reports that the generous man, identified as Wang, was visiting his girlfriend in Chongqing on Sunday, and planned to propose to her with a three-carat diamond ring that cost him over RMB300,000.
But en route he stopped for a bite to eat at a noodle shop, and left his bag, along with the ring, sitting outside.
The bag was found by a local resident and passed on to restaurant staff, who gave it back to Wang when he returned.
On Monday, the restaurant displayed a letter explaining that Wang’s girlfriend accepted the proposal, and it was all possible thanks to the kindness of Chongqing locals.
“Chongqing has the woman I love and so many nice people,” he said. “I feel very honored and happy.”
To celebrate the return of his valuable gem, and his new-found engagement, Wang returned to the noodle shop and paid for 5,000 bowls of the spicy and sour noodles, the average number of daily orders for the restaurant.
Hungry patrons formed a line 100 meters down the block on Tuesday awaiting their delicious freebie.
“I think this story is really moving,” one man said to reporters after scoring his complementary noodles. “Love is beautiful and people’s hearts are more beautiful.”
Love is beautiful, but is it really more beautiful than 5,000 free bowls of spicy and sour Chongqing noodles? We’ll leave that for you to decide, dear reader.
Chinese media love to rejoice at ‘heartwarming’ moments that some might describe as common courtesy, but this generosity really tugs at our heartstrings.
Wang, your fiance is a lucky woman.
