A hit-and-run case that pitted Shenzhen police against shared-bike giant Ofo has apparently been resolved with the detention of the bicyclist that struck an elderly woman on May 27.

The 29-year-old woman, surnamed Gao, was riding an Ofo bike that she had found unlocked. She was on Shennan Dadao in Shenzhen’s Futian District when she hit Jia, 57, causing a fractured rib and bruises, according to Shenzhen Daily.

Gao was found by police in a hotel in the Zhuzilin area of Futian District on June 9 around 11am, according to The Paper.

The Shenzhen Daily report says that Gao took Jia’s husband’s phone number before fleeing on a second Ofo bike. Reportedly, Gao didn't inquire if Jia needed medical attention out of fear of being blackmailed.

After the incident, Shenzhen police requested information from Ofo about Gao, but the company did not immediately cooperate. The Ofo bike that struck Jia was found to have faulty brakes, according to a China Global Television Network report.

The incident highlights bigger questions about who is responsible when accidents occur involving shared bikes.
