At 588km in length, Shanghai's ever-growing subway network is the longest metro system in the world.
According to a recent China Daily report, Shanghai surpassed New York and Paris to become the world's top ranking city for metro rail mileage. It should be noted that the data is not necessarily new; Shanghai and Beijing have held the top two spots for a few years now, and Shanghai's mileage was last reported in December 2015. As of December 2016, Beijing is close behind at 574km.
"Connecting infrastructure transportation between rural and urban parts of Shanghai is an important area of development," said Han Zheng, Shanghai Party Secretary.
Shanghai also plays in the major league in other transportation areas. As a global port city, it has ranked high as a container transportation hub for the past seven years. In terms of freight transport, Shanghai is the third biggest player globally. Also, the number of outbound air travelers from Shanghai's major airports has reached 100 million, topping the rest of China.
The city's next target is to make every city in the Yangtze River Delta reachable within 90 minutes. This will be done by putting more effort into integrating the transportation within the region.
Furthermore, Shanghai is looking to turn public transportation into the most convenient way of commuting by increasing 'last one kilometer' transportation, a term that refers to modes of transport that aren't buses or trains, such as bike sharing.
