US and South Korean intelligence agencies have allegedly attempted to assassinate Kim Jong Un, North Korean state media report.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), a state-run media agency in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said Friday that the United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and South Korea's Intelligence Service (IS) attempted to assinate the country's top leader via "biochemical" and "radioactive" substances.

Chinese state media, including Xinhua and the Global Times, posted the news just minutes ago.

The CIA and IS are accused of "hatch[ing] a vicious plot" to kill Kim during public ceremonial events in Pyongyang, according to the AFP.

NKNews.org reports that the intelligence agencies are accused of attempting to carry out a biochemical attack against the leader during North Korea's April 15 military parade, which celebrated the 105th birthday of DPRK founding leader Kim Il Sung.

North Korea claims the CIA recruited one of its own citizens to carry out the attack. The spy, surnamed Kim, had allegedly worked as a lumberjack in Khaborovsk Territory in eastern Russia. KCNA claims the CIA and IS “corrupted his mind” and transformed him into “a terrorist full of repugnance and revenge against the supreme leadership of the DPRK.”

KCNA says Kim was paid USD20,000 to use radioactive or nanoparticle poisonous material in the attack. He was also provided with a GPS and was contacted several times throughout 2016 with instructions while he resided in Pyongyang.

In a dispatch, KCNA detailed the attack:

“The heinous terrorist criminal group was discovered which infiltrated the DPRK after careful preparations...

“They hatched a plot of letting human scum Kim commit bomb terrorism targeting the supreme leadership during events at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun and at military parade and public procession after his return home...

“We will ferret out the last one out of the fanatic terrorists of the U.S. imperialist Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the puppet National Intelligence Service (NIS) who targeted the dignity of the DPRK supreme leadership, and mercilessly destroy [them].”

KCNA did not reveal how the plot was discovered.
