On the morning of March 20, just after 11am, a man wandered out onto the roof of the Guangzhou Pazhou Commercial Plaza. The man used a ladder to climb to the highest point of the 41-story building and stood on the edge of the narrow one-meter wide platform. Then he jumped.

Fortunately, this intrepid mystery man came prepared with a parachute. And luckily for all of us vicarious adrenaline junkies, shocked onlookers managed to record the jump using their mobile phones.

The footage shows the daring BASE jumper deploy his shoot and skillfully navigate a safe landing. Such low altitude jumps are obviously extremely dangerous because the jumper only has a few seconds to deploy and must also then direct the parachute to land successfully. This guy must have been a pro.

The video quickly went viral on social media, racking up over 2 million views. Guangzhou authorities were decidedly less pleased, as urban low-altitude BASE jumping is technically illegal due to the possible risk to public safety.

Lawyers that appeared on Guangzhou TV indicated that if the man did it on behalf of a company as a marketing stunt then he is liable to face punishment. However, if he acted spontaneously on his own, lawyers suggested there would be no basis for legal penalties. As of now, the daredevil’s identity and motives are still a mystery.
