Guangzhou to Host Fortune 500 CEOs at Global Forum in December

Thought our city would literally disappear from the map with all the fog we’ve been experiencing lately? Think again.

This December, Guangzhou will play host to the 2017 Fortune Global Forum – an annual conference that has “convened world leaders and heads of global business on the dynamic frontiers of international commerce since 1995,” as stated on Fortune’s website.

It’s an opportunity for CEOs of the world’s largest multinational companies (aka the Fortune Global 500) to rub shoulders with Chinese leaders in both business and government.

But what does it mean for us? Possibly denser traffic – or Fortune blue skies – or both, as well as a chance to spot high-profile CEOs and politicians right here in Guangzhou.

Past Fortune conferences have been attended by the likes of former US Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush and company chairmen Ma Yun of Alibaba, Robert Iger of The Walt Disney Company and Jamie Dimon of J.P. Morgan Chase.

Why convene in Guangzhou and not Shanghai or Beijing? Fortune Editor-in-Chief Alan Murray says Guangzhou is “China’s southern passage to the world… the perfect area for the 2017 Fortune Global Forum.”

Canton was, after all, the center of international trade for a few hundred years back during the time of the Thirteen Factories (no, not the restaurant – Google it).

While the forum – which runs from Wednesday, December 6 to Friday, December 8 – is regrettably invite-only, we’re still pretty psyched that it might make headlines back home and remind our families that we live in a reasonably ‘happening’ place and not some city no one’s ever heard of. Oh wait…
