If condoms are your prophylactics of choice, think twice before reaching for one next time you're feeling amorous with your partner.
According to a report (in Chinese) published by the National Business Daily, China's foremost business and economic publication, 32 percent of all imported condoms failed quality testing. In a random sampling of 133 condoms, 43 failed to meet quality standards.

Condoms that failed quality testing include brands such as Jissbon, Okamoto (Gang Ben), Six Sex, Elasun, True Sex, Doneless, Nox, and One Topeak. The majority of these brands are imported from Malaysia, Thailand, and Japan. The report mentioned the testing was conducted in 2016 but did not specify the exact date. A full list of the brands that failed testing can be found here .
The biggest issue these condoms were cited for was expiring before the indicated expiration date. Condoms that failed testing were also cited for not meeting packaging and labeling standards.
This is not the first time a condom scandal has rocked China. In 2015, police busted a counterfeit condom operation in Shanghai. And in 2014, 34 million fake condoms were seized from an illegal factory in Hunan.
As news of the failed condoms circulated on Weibo on Monday, Chinese netizens expressed concern and dismay. Many commented that their favorite brand of condom is on the list while others confessed that "This is exactly the reason why I'm single."
If there is anything more effective at preventing unwanted pregnancies in China, it's not the use of prophylactics, but scandals like this. Only if this news came early enough for Valentine's Day.
