The Chinese man who was stuck in India for over 50 years has just returned to China.
Wang Qi, the People's Liberation Army surveyor who accidentally walked into India during the Sino-Indian war in 1963 and captured by the Indian army, flew home with his adult children to Xianyang, Shaanxi province last Saturday where he was greeted by a crowd with banners reading "Welcome home, soldier, it's been a rough journey.”
Since being detained, Wang has been unable to leave India. He has been denied Indian citizenship and the opportunity to travel back to China.
After being interviewed by the BBC in early February, he was visited by Chinese diplomats and given travel documents by the Indian Foreign Ministry saying he was cleared to leave. However, Wang's status remains unsettled, and it's not certain whether he will return to India.
At the time of his capture, Indian authorities claimed he gave false information regarding his background and circumstances of his whereabouts. He joined the army in 1960 and was building roads near the Indian border when he "strayed erroneously” into India’s territory in January 1963. He was sent to jail for seven years before being released to Tirodi, a small village in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, in 1969. Wang, whose Indian name is Raj Bahadur, married a local Indian woman and now has grown children and grandchildren.
