6 Million Chinese Tourists Going Abroad During CNY

Does the thought of booking a Chinese New Year train ticket make you absolutely terrified? Would you rather get the hell outta Dodge China for the upcoming Spring Festival? Well just be warned that you'll be in company with at least 5,999,999 other travelers who will have exactly the same idea as you. (It IS the world's largest human migration on Earth, after all).

If recent analysis from the Daily Economic News is to believed, up to six million Chinese tourists will travel abroad during the holiday. Based on air ticket booking data, they concluded that travelers will fly to 174 countries and regions during Chinese New Year, spending an average of 9.2 days on their vacations.

That will translate into big bucks for those 174 host countries, as per capita expenditures are expected to hit RMB15,000. That adds up to a whopping RMB100 billion expected to be spent by Chinese tourists overseas.

According to Ctrip, the most popular destinations booked so far have been Bangkok, Tokyo and Singapore. To accomodate the expected windfall of travelers domestic airlines such as China Southern, Hainan Airlines and Spring Airlines have added new international non-stop routes.
