In the aftermath of Singles Day, millions of cardboard boxes filled with goods purchased on 11/11 are crammed in postal offices across the country. Throughout the seven-day period following Singles Day, the postal service will have received more than one billion packages nationally, 250 million of which will be from Guangdong province.

Due to the high number of orders on Taobao, JD.com and other shopping websites this year, delivery personnel are having trouble keeping up with the incoming packages. One courier told Guangzhou Daily that she worked for 20 hours in one day and, on that day alone, earned the equivalent of her monthly salary, RMB5,000 – RMB6,000.

Although the pay is good during the 11/11 madness, couriers are also held accountable for lost parcels. According to Tencent News, Mr. Zhang, who has worked as a delivery man for three years, lost a box of cellphones last year and was asked to pay RMB6000 out of his own pocket to make up for the loss.

So, in the coming days and weeks, if you see a worn-out delivery person be sure to give them a smile!
