On November 15, Ms. Shi bought imported 'lamb chops' from New Zealand at the Dongguan Food Festival at Fenggang Gymnasium. Expecting to taste mouth-watering lamb on the bone, she took a bite and her teeth hit a hard wooden stick instead.
Disguised as lamb chops, these rou chuan (basically meat on a stick) are a popular street food among locals.
Most skewers sold on the streets claim to be lamb meat (yang ruo chuan), but one can never be too sure when buying sketchy street food. Having been deceived, Ms. Shi went on the web to express her rage. She wrote “I don’t even know if what I am eating now is lamb meat or other kinds of meat.”
As we always say when it comes to street food: buyer beware.
