For years, China has seen a huge increase in the number of patients with diabetes as well as an influx of fat camps to battle the increasing weight issues. Unfortunately, those numbers are still continuing to grow.
According to the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, one third of Shanghai’s residents over the age of 35 have diabetes or are on their way to becoming diabetic. That number has doubled since 2002, and there is now an estimated 2 million Shanghai inhabitants with the disease.
Additionally, 16.51 percent of residents over 35 have pre-diabetes. This means their glucose levels are higher than what is considered healthy, but they do not have diabetes yet. If nothing is done to control their glucose levels though, it's very likely they'll develop the disease.
The government has however taken steps to control and prevent diabetes. In 2004, all neighborhood heath centers began to educate the public on the disease and started screening people at risk. If a patient is in danger of developing diabetes, doctors support them with a preventative management system.
These precautionary measures will be improved in the coming year when a screening system will be put in place to scan 1 million of the city's residents for risky factors, while leading hospitals will continue to train community doctors on proper
diabetes management.
By the end of 2016, the screening process has seen over 300,000 people and over 630,000 patients have been taught to handle diabetes.
