Shanghai-rens favorite escape-the-city bolt-hole since the 1800s, Moganshan has another fantastic option for those looking for alpine air, the sight of swaying Bamboo and to completely unwind. Neatly tucked way up a secluded valley, Arcadia is a seven-room, boutique hotel mountain villa in the village of Muzhuwucun.

The first thing to strike you on arrival is the inviting blue waters of the infinity pool. Set up a rural road in its own valley, as Arcadia is, the pool is perfectly positioned to take in sweeping views of the bamboo forest and blue skies.

Great to chill next to by day, the beautifully lit blue mosaic is equally inviting at night (it is heated), as is the poolside bar with full cocktail service, where cool beats waft over the water.

cocktail-bar.jpgThe villa itself, the work of Austrian designer Genco Berk, is a textured terracotta red that is reminiscent of a Tuscan villa, with more seating areas outside so meals can be taken al fresco as the mood suits.

Owner Ernie is a Shanghainese-turned-Canadian, and Arcadia is clearly a passion project as much as a business venture. The warm rustic design elements continue inside, where contemporary designer furniture is complemented by the striking works of Brazilian photographer Sebastiao Salgado hanging on an exposed brick-wall.

With floor-to-ceiling windows, the bedrooms are light-filled and airy. Each room has a balcony, while a terrace with Jacuzzi is on the way. The floor is heated in winter, toiletries come virtue of top brand Australian Appelles, while a baby cot is available if required (as it was for us).

Breakfast and dinner are included, and befitting what feels like a taste of Tuscany set in a bamboo forest, dinner alternates between Western and Chinese each night. Chef Xin has five-star hotel experience in abundance, and both were mouth-watering.
