The incredible images are the product of his unusual photography style and fascination with the city. During the 1950s, it was common to take pictures in a studio. However, Fan took his camera out to the streets to capture architecture, people and everyday life.

Fan arrived in Hong Kong from Shanghai in 1949, during a time when the southern city was experiencing a huge surge in population.

Between 1945 and 1951, Hong Kong’s population grew from around 600,000 to 2.1 million. It’s a good thing Fan remembered to bring his camera.
