Want to feel bad about your selfie? Fan Ho was just a teenager when he captured these amazing photographs of Hong Kong in the 1950s.
The incredible images are the product of his unusual photography style and fascination with the city. During the 1950s, it was common to take pictures in a studio. However, Fan took his camera out to the streets to capture architecture, people and everyday life.
Fan's collection of exquisite shots can be found in his book, A Hong Kong Memoir.
The photographs show everyday moments within a busy metropolis. Fan’s pictures give us a sneak peek into a world many of us have never experienced.
Fan arrived in Hong Kong from Shanghai in 1949, during a time when the southern city was experiencing a huge surge in population.
Between 1945 and 1951, Hong Kong’s population grew from around 600,000 to 2.1 million. It’s a good thing Fan remembered to bring his camera.
