Record Breaking Glass Bottomed Bridge Closes Just 13 Days After Grand Opening

Bad news for those hoping to cross Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon's new glass bridge: it closed 13 days after its grand opening, indefinitely.

The announcement was made by local officials on Weibo, who apologized for any inconvenience caused. However, they made no comment about when the bridge would reopen.

A marketing spokesman for the Zhangjaijie Grand Canyon told CNN that the bridge had been “overwhelmed” by the number of visitors. In the two week period of its opening, the attraction, which has a capacity of 8,000, had been subjected to 10 times the level of demand.

When asked whether the glass had cracked the spokesman said that there was no such problem and that there had been no accidents either. It was revealed that some tour parties may be allowed to visit the bridge with advanced notice.

When the bridge opened it was heralded as the tallest and longest glass bridge in the world, giving visitors the opportunity to experience walking in the air above a 300 meter drop to the canyon floor. Prior to opening, designers hit the glass floor panels with axes and drove a Volvo SUV across to prove its strength, but clearly that was not comparable to the thousands of visitors traversing daily.
