Three men were arrested in Dongguan last month for purportedly selling refurbished Apple iPhones as brand spanking new. According to Dongguan Broadcasting Television’s website, Sun0769.com, the men are believed to have made over RMB10 million through their illicit business.
The men were reportedly arrested after a tip-off and police confiscated 188 phones – including the newest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, according to South China Morning Post. Authorities also discovered roughly 200 fake iPhone boxes, complete with chargers, earphones and additional accessories.
The repaired phones allegedly looked new and were sold in over 20 provinces – including Shandong, Qinghai and Zhejiang. The three detainees stated they mainly purchased the smartphones in Shenzhen and then paid to have them restored.
While it is unclear where the iPhones were revamped, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the same Huaqiang Bei market, in Futian, that upgrades iPhone storage from 16 to 128 gigabytes for only RMB400.
One of the men arrested was supposedly out on bail for a prior phone counterfeiting charge when he was arrested.
