On August 29, an air-strike-like plume of black smoke rose high above a Guangzhou highway intersection, stopping traffic and temporarily closing a number of roads.

The incident happened around noon at the intersection of the Leguang and Shaohun expressways in Huadu District. The towering smoke cloud was heavily documented by bystanders, with images and videos making the rounds on Chinese social media websites.

While some commenters and netizens have claimed the fire and resulting smoke plume were the result of a plane crash, local media has stated a truck fire is to blame

While information on what type of truck was responsible for the billowing smog is scarce, our guesses range from mobile meth lab accident to overturned petroleum transporter.

According to one news broadcast, nearby farmers claimed to have heard three explosions before witnessing the massive fire and skyscraper-high smoke cloud.

The Huadu Traffic Police Department’s communications division told That’s they had no further information available on the incident.
