Chinese swimmer Chen Xinyi has tested positive for a banned substance at the Rio Games, according to Brazilian media.
After the news was first broken by major Brazilian newspaper Estadao, the Chinese Swimming Association (CSA) confirmed that Chen tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide on August 7, after her fourth place finish in the 100m butterfly final. The banned substance is typically used to hide performance-enhancing drugs.
The 18-year-old was allegedly unaware of the failed test until Tuesday. She has applied to have the International Olympic Committee (IOC) test her B sample, according to the CSA. She will also apply for a hearing.
Chen was scheduled to compete in the 50m freestyle heats later today. Her previous swimming accolades include a sixth place finish in the 100m butterfly and gold medal in China's medley relay at the world championships last year. In 2014, she won the 50m free, 100m fly and 400m free relay at the Asian Games in Incheon.
The news comes on the heels of another doping scandal involving the Chinese swim team at this year's Games. Earlier this week, Aussie swimmer Mack Horton caused an uproar in China after accusing Sun Yang of being a "drug cheat." Sun was banned from competing for three months in 2014 when he tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine.
