A 37-year-old Shaanxi man was arrested a few weeks ago after faking his own drowning during a family dispute.
The man, surnamed Li, threw himself into the lake by jumping off a bridge near Wugong county in Shaanxi. Unknown to his family, he survived the plunge, swam ashore and drove away to a nearby town without notifying anyone.
Meanwhile, at least 200 people — including 120 rescue workers — were sent to go looking for Li. They spent nearly 17 hours searching for him over a 30 kilometer area.
Family members were shocked the next day when he called to inform them he was "safe and sound" in nearby Xianyang city.
He told local police that after he fell, he felt ashamed to see so many people looking for him, so he quietly drove away from the scene.
The man was jailed for five days for disturbing public order.
